Information about Literacy Lab
What is Literacy Lab?
Systematic literacy instruction that includes core reading, word work, and writing skill development.
Who is part of Literacy Lab?
Students in grades 5-6 in the 2019-2020 school year are selected to participate in Literacy Lab, including by IEP team determination. It is designed for students who demonstrate reading delays and who would most benefit from individualized, differentiated instruction provided in a small group setting.
How are children identified for Literacy Lab?
Students are selected based on classroom, state, individualized, and district-wide assessments, classroom reading performance, and grade level team recommendations. This program services students based on program need/fit and is open to students who meet the criteria. This includes students who are identified with a reading-writing disability, as well as those who require a comprehensive and rigorous Response to Intervention and are not identified with a disability.
When does Literacy Lab occur?
Identified students attend Literacy Lab during their classroom reading block.
What does Literacy Lab look like?
Students participate in mini-lesson, whole and small group instruction, book clubs, partner work, modeled and independent reading and writing, word study, and fluency/phonics/vocabulary instruction using a variety of materials. Our core programming is through Units of Study. Word Work includes Lindamood-Bell Seeing Stars components. Students receive 1:1 instruction relative to individual reading and writing needs. Students are using Google Classroom this year for written responses and access to assignments in reading and writing.
