I noticed the students who needed more comprehension work chose large or small group and those that needed fluency work the most, (and who were often also self-conscious) and chose 1:1
d. What are your best strategies when reading? What works for you?
Comprehension: go back and re-read, asking questions, read out loud, making sure I understand, listening to audiobook, using pink highlighter to track, software, re-read, reading slowly, read more than once, re-reading my work, tell about what I just read, chunking the words
Accuracy: re-read, sound out unknown words, use of colored overlay, read over and over, looking carefully at the word so I can read it right, don’t look fast – look slow, use a tracker to keep place (finger/pencil/neon notecard, reading window)
Fluency: use pointer, go back and re-read, read, read over and over, keep on reading, following along/tracking with my finger, don’t read fast, go back and look at the words, keeping my pace, reading independently, practice, writing bigger words and breaking them up, using expression of my voice, taking a break at periods and commas, using headphones, keeping track
Expand Vocabulary: reading more, word work, reading over and over until I get it, change the words, learn more words, reading more books, reading out loud, having bigger words to write, practice, using big words in writing, skipping the word and going back, talking about the words, stop and think
e. Tell us your thoughts about what you think you need for next year’s reading program?
Read 180, small group, read more, “if I need help, I can get it”, reading to other people or using Tubaloo®, a small group of people and audiobooks, get help with the words and partner work, poetry, read in the summer and read out loud, reading more, more read aloud, dictionary and more practice in vocabulary, more 1-minute reads so I can read out loud and more poetry, more 1:1 time with the teacher, more r-Book, more Quick-Writes, using a reading window and sitting at the circle table, more reading games, more independent reading, more read aloud when the teacher reads to us, 2 weeks for each 1-minute read.
